A proven dental phantom

Dr. Nosil played a key role in making the Foothills Hospital one of the foremost hospitals in North America. It was a pleasure for me to collaborate with him on a project to determine attenuation coefﬁcients of gamma rays in tissue. This work was subsequently published. In another project, we studied the feasibility of using a coded aperture for diagnostic imaging. Such apertures are used to form X-ray images of astronomical sources. We felt that the device might allow imaging to be carried out using less radiation intensities than are needed for pin-hole imaging. A mosaic of plastic and lead squares was constructed and we succeeded in reconstructing an image of a thyroid phantom.

As a biologist with 15 years experience in ecology, genetics, and evolution I can testify that there is increasing evidence for the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. How our phantom works

What makes this phantom unique is its ability to replicate dental x-ray exposure to the human jaw, jawbone, and teeth. It is the only technology that permits analysis about actual human jaw and teeth. It is simple, reproducible, consistent and it is easier than taking patient intraoral images (shown in the picture on the lower right circle). It takes less than 10 minutes to set up (as illustrated in the left circle), expose, review, and then digitally save the resulting images (as in the upper circle). The phantom is durable and constructed as an integrated device with the user being able to quickly adjust to film, full digital or slim digital detector design. The easy to follow "User Manual” guides the user with step by step instructions and illustrations. The design results in fast, accurate, and consistent application.
